Pale Pleats

This past weekend was perfect fall weather.  Sunny but crisp and cool.  Not so cold that I had to bundle up too much, but I was still able to break out my favorite leather jacket and glove combo.

I love combining thicker sweaters with this super feminine skirt.  It makes the skirt feels a bit more casual and easy.

I couldn't resist throwing on a bit of leopard.  And I love mixing in these grey tights - the heathered grey is a little unusual, but a fun change.

Sun Dappled

The sun dappled water almost matched  my jeans.  I thought it was fitting, but you can bet my family busted on me for wearing leopard print jeans in the Adirondacks.  At this point, I'm used to questioning looks at my outfits!

In anticipation of cooler temperatures when the sun went down, I kept my favorite pink striped shirt close at hand.

Can't beat spending an afternoon lakeside with the family.

Bow Tie

The parks are in full bloom here in Brooklyn.  It was a warm day so I took the opportunity to break out shorts for the first time this season (outside of Florida, that is).
Instead of wrapping my scarf in a more traditional way, I tied it in a bow and wore it as a makeshift bow tie.
The draped pleats on these shorts make them feel a bit on the dressier side.  Pairing them with a denim button down keeps things casual.
I love this in-between weather.  I can wear boots with shorts without it being too hot.
I borrowed my husband's denim shirt and rolled up the sleeves to make it feel a bit less oversized.
I'm ready for picnic season!

For the Birds

We spent a great weekend in Santa Rosa, about one and a half hours north of San Francisco, visiting family.  The weather was spectacular - warm and sunny in the middle of February.  I could get used to it!  We took a trip up to the schoolhouse that was part of a scene from Hitchcock's "The Birds."  We saw some birds, but mostly just gorgeous views.
A leather jacket and lightweight scarf were all I needed.
Navy and neon pink is my new favorite combination.  They compliment each other so nicely.
This skirt is actually my DIY dress that I put together last month.  The wind was having quite a bit of fun playing with the bottom of the skirt.
My Foley+Corinna bag was the perfect travel bag - roomy enough to act as my carry-on and super easy for toting around my camera and other odds and ends for the rest of the trip.
An easy and playful outfit for a jam-packed day.

Graffiti

The colorful graffiti is so unexpected on the side of this unassuming building.  But looking closer you can see that there is a major transition in the works and this parking lot is well on its way to becoming an urban garden.
I love the oversized neck on this sweater.  Even without sleeves, it's super warm and cozy.
It was so warm out on this particular day that all I needed was this lightweight blazer.
The details on this sweater are great.  Who doesn't love side slits?
This colorful graffiti wall was the perfect contrast to my super neutral outfit.
I can't wait to check back this Spring to see the final outcome.

Oh La La

So the Gowanus Canal is not the Seine...OK, it's not even the East River, but it is right around the corner from our apartment in Brooklyn.  And on a bright, sunny day it can be almost pretty. Almost...
Whenever I wear these jeans, I feel like I'm channeling my inner 1970s-self.  High-waisted, stone-washed, bell-bottomed.
I kept things weekend casual, pairing the jeans with my favorite striped shirt.
And of course, my favorite red cap.
...and red leather gloves
I've had this jacket for years now, it's a simple, wool swing coat, but the inside is a plaid pattern and I love the toggle buttons.
All in all, I felt like I was channeling my inner French girl, simple palette and classic shapes.

A Trip to Sagamore Hill

What does one wear to the former house of a former president in the beginning of winter? For a visit to Teddy Roosevelt's home at Sagamore Hill - now a national park, I decided to debut some new items I've been excited about, without being too over-the-top—don't want to scare the locals in Oyster Bay. I loved how the metallic sheen of this belt played off the gold in the jacket without overpowering.

Neutral layers balanced my less neutral hues and prints, plus they were totally weather appropriate.

A sensible bag kept me grounded even with a bit of lift from the highest heels in my closet!

I've been envisioning wearing these shoes with these pants before owning either. I have to say, I'm pretty happy with the results.

Another satisfying day trip...

But I'm ready to get back to Brooklyn.

Thanksgiving on Cape Cod

After a train ride out of one city and a car ride into another, I arrived on Cape Cod to spend the holiday with my husband's family. During our traditional walk on the beach before the meal, I truly appreciated that, this year, Thanksgiving had arrived on an unseasonably warm, cloudless day. The kind of day where you can still get away with a fall jacket–just barely.

One last chance to walk in the sand before the snow starts falling.  (I don't generally wear suede boots on the beach, I also had sneakers!)

Classic red and black checkers hold in heat and keeps things casual. A pretty romper is great for walking, especially when the wind starts blowing.  Side note: by adding opaque tights to an outfit you can help to extend the life of more summery pieces.  Despite the sunny skies, I knew the cold was coming. My bright blue nail polish is a departure from this summer's hot pinks but still adds a flash of bright color.  Before five o'clock, the sun was going down, and it really started to feel like winter. A few cozy staples in black kept me warm.

Of course, staying warm on the beach in November isn't easy.  I guess it's time to accept that fall is drawing to a close. But if that means a beautiful day on the beach that ends with a warm meal and family, that's fine by me.

Pink Lady

This weekend ended up being the most beautiful weekends of the summer...even if it was October.

I finally broke out my leather jacket, and then realized it was going to be about 85 degrees (and sunny!!) and it might have been a bit premature.  None the less, beautiful weather on a Saturday is OK in my book.  Throwing on a pair of opaque tights will extend the life of your favorite summery dresses - at least for a couple weeks.  Add a pair of boots and you're ready for Fall.  Or Summer in the case of this weekend.
