Brick and Mortar

I spent the last few days of 2011 seeing old friends and catching up.  Congrats H&N - so happy for you!  This year was a pretty amazing, quite a few milestones to look back on most fondly.  I am really looking forward to ringing in 2012 with close friends in Brooklyn.
In lieu of jeans - my traditional day off go-to - I chose a simple dress/sweatshirt/colorful tights combo.
It ended up being sort of unseasonably warm, didn't even need my scarf.
My favorite feature of this dress is the built in scarf tied up in a bow.
I've worn this combo before - but never with green tights, which I sort of love.
I have this sweatshirt in three different colors, it's the most comfortable thing ever.  I try not to overwear it...or at least find interesting ways to change it up.
I wish you a happy and healthy new year.  Here is to making 2012 the best yet.

A Walk in the Park

Every once in a while a Brooklyn girl makes it out to Manhattan (on the weekend). This day in Central Park, my location wasn't the only thing a bit topsy-turvy.
Feminine florals paired so sweetly with the ultimate in "boyfriend" jeans: hand-me-downs from my husband.

This sweater is definitely a Mister, but he didn't seem to mind taking a stroll with two ladylike patterns.

Gotta make the socks worth a look if you're gonna show 'em. I loved the contrast between this cozy Fair Isle-esqe pattern and the patent leather shine of the shoes.

Along with mixing masculine vs feminine pieces, I combined a variety of textures and patterns.

A slouchy silhouette with heels and enough color to keep things interesting—it all came together for an easy and playful weekend look.

Happy Holidays!

Merry Christmas from the north country!  The Adirondacks were kind enough to order up a White Christmas.  Took advantage of a bit of downtime and sunlight to get out for a Christmas Eve walk.  This is my favorite place in the world.  Gathering with family in a special place makes for a pretty perfect holiday season.
Layers are a must, temperatures didn't go far above the teens all day.
I stole the scarf from my husband, super soft and great colors!
 Warm hats are a necessity.
 Bean Duck boots.  Adirondack staple.

May your days be merry and bright.  And may all your Christmases be white!

Happy holidays to all (whatever you may celebrate!)!

Holiday Pants

When I first saw these pants, I knew I had to have them.  My love of patterned pants dates back to grade school when stretch pants were pretty much all I would wear (I didn't even call them leggings at this point).  And the louder the better.  These days, I generally like my patterned pants to be a bit more subtle, which is why I love these.  And you can't go wrong with Tartan - especially this time of year!
Of course, my pairing with orangy-red accents definitely kicks these pants into holiday territory.
The belt adds the obligatory bit of sparkle.
The super feminine clutch provides a nice, soft contrast to the blues, greens and reds that dominate the rest of the look.
I kept the shoes simple and classic, can't go wrong with black peep toe pumps.
Off to celebrate the holidays in the Adirondacks!

Grit and Glam

I love mixing in a real eye-catcher with an otherwise simple outfit. So I really, for sure, had to pair this top with these jeans and this button-down…

...Okay, I admit it, I bought this top for New Years Eve, but I just couldn't wait to wear it!

My new favorite jeans. They're from a small company, EmersonMade. After FedEx held them hostage for a week, I spent this one breaking them in.

This top is great for the season, what with all the holiday parties. And matching it with an easy chambray button-down and skinny jeans keeps the whole look on the more casual side of sequins.

I loved how the light bounced off my sequins (and the frame of my sunglasses) for an extra shot of glam.

Don't worry, I didn't get too carried away with all the gold flashes. I still love the good ol' grit of Brooklyn.

Fade to Grey

With the days getting shorter, colder and in general grey-er, I took advantage of a beautiful late afternoon patch of sunshine in Redhook.
I layered a cozy sweater and blazer over a party dress to make it a bit more afternoon appropriate.
The industrial factory building provided a perfect contrasting backdrop for a rather lady-like look.
I added a bright necklace for some color and a hand-knit hat for warmth - don't let the light fool you, it was pretty but freezing!
Sticking with the theme, I carried black and grey right through to my shoes - and the garage door and gate!
The skirt caught the light perfectly and really brought out the pattern.

Santa Baby

Just in case his elves missed anything, I played Santa's Little Helper myself this weekend and took a Sunday to do some relaxed holiday shopping.
I felt positively festive in my green sweater and red hat.

Lucky for me, I don't have to live at the North Pole, and I can shop online.  Love those modern conveniences.

My inner elf was channeling Alexa Chung, with my blouse buttoned all the way up, skinny jeans, and flats.
I can never resist a pop of color. I loved how the magenta flats complimented the green and played off the red in my hat.
A great, easy weekend outfit. Perfect for lounging before I ran out to get our small, potted Christmas tree! Now, time to see how many lights and ornaments its little branches can support…
