Candy Color

After a great weekend visiting a friend in North Carolina, I was happy to spend Sunday afternoon enjoying the Brooklyn waterfront.
I found this necklace while in NC.  I love how the chains are all different colors.  I thought it worked nicely with my polka dot shirt.
I love these untraditional, candy colored polka dots.
Boots are my go to for cooler weather months.  These shoes are great because they have the feel of booties, but the cut outs make them much more manageable for hotter months.
It was great to be back in Brooklyn!

Gingham

I love a good skirt and shirt combo.  Makes getting dressed in the morning super easy - two pieces and you're done.
This skirt (or, rather, dress worn as a skirt) is one of my favorites.  The untraditional hem and deep green color are so pretty.
Throw in a navy, heeled sandal and I'm ready for work.
The texture of the gingham shirt is almost an exaggerated seersucker.  Even when I try to iron it, it keeps it's texture.  I've resolved to just go with it!
Like I said above, this skirt is actually a dress.  Knotting my shirt at the waist helps to give a little definition.
I topped it all off with my Jet Setter Jr. and I'm ready to take on the day.

Pallet

We found this pile of old pallets at the back of a huge parking lot near our apartment.  The warm natural wood with splashes of blue and red provided a nice back drop to my super neutral outfit.
I found these boots at the Barney's Warehouse Sale and have to say, I'm pretty excited.  They're super stiff, thick leather, so they'll definitely take some work to break in.  But I think they'll only get better with wear.
The rest of the outfit was pretty simple with tone on tone greys and tans.
I love how you can see just a hint of patterned silk under my grey blazer.
I'm in the spring mind-set already so I choose a lighter weight scarf.
Bright red lipstick topped things off - providing a much needed little splash of color.

Snow Day

We finally had some snow in Brooklyn - first time since Halloween!  Had to go out for a walk to take advantage of the wintery conditions!
The super white light brought out the colors in the sweater, blouse and lipstick.
The red lipstick against the white hat and black hood, it was a major snow white moment.
The bow on the blouse allows for the pattern to be brought out from behind the sweater and become a focal point.
The sweater offers a little bit of neutral and a little bit of pop at the same time.  Perfection.
Wearing warm tights under my hole-y jeans keeps me warm and comfortable even on a cold, blustery day.  Layers are definitely my go to for winter.

Dead End

It was super grey out (and freezing cold), so I decided to brighten things up with some colorful layers.
I reworked this dress (last seen here) into a flippy mini-skirt.
Belting my trusty chambray button up over the dress gave some definition.
The colors in the Fair Isle pattern in the sweater picked up the color of the skirt perfectly.
I've had this Foley + Corinna bag for years (in fact the label dates back to when the bags were produced under the Anna Corinna label!).  It's one of my favorites, the leather keeps getting better with age - and it could literally fit my life inside.
I rounded things out with opaque tights and penny loafers.  Warm, easy and colorful.

[Charles] Water Under the Bridge

The Charles that I knew in college was always a source of calm alongside the busy streets that wind their way through Boston. A half-hour into the suburbs, where my husband grew up, its otherwise peaceful current tumbles over a dam and throws off a shower of golden-green sparks.

The light was perfect to show off my own sparks.

In green, gold, and gray, I might have blended into my surroundings if not for these pieces' unique lines and textures (plus some orangy-red lipstick - Nars Heat Wave to be exact).

Feeling zen with my watery counterpart.
These boots work with almost everything, even stone walls by the riverside.
I loved visiting the Charles' combination of color, calm, and a bit of glimmer–just like I remembered.

Feeling the Fall

Sure, it's been a little while since I've been a student, and it's a little late for a back-to-school post. But the leaves in New England are still fully fall, and there was something about visiting the state where I got my degree that put me in the spirit.
The muted, neutral colors of this sweater and blouse matched the shades of the leaves on the ground, while the hat's red is reminiscent of their bright colors before they fell.
The slouchy hat, sweater, and jeans combo is perfect for comfortable-cool. I completed the outfit with the belted blouse for a bit of femininity and shape.  The blouse is actually more of a blazer or "third piece," but by wrapping it and adding a belt, the blazer turned into a blouse in no time at all!

It never fails–every time I wear these jeans outside New York City, some random middle aged dude is sure to let me know they've got a few holes and need to be replaced!
Just because the weather's cooler doesn't mean you need to live in boots. For socks, however, I do recommend a pair without holes.
Ready for class–only now I'm studying the hues of nature and the crunch of the leaves underfoot.

Black and Tan (/Tan and Black)

You can't just pour any two fermented grains together and expect the results to be potable. But a black and tan just works — and it looks pretty, too.

I got these boots a couple weeks ago. I loved the contrasting strip that goes up the back with the zipper, and the fact that they're incredibly comfortable, especially for a 4-inch-plus heels. We're taught that black and brown don't work as a match (sort of like you can't wear white after Labor Day), but if you get the right shade, the pairing is perfect.

It was beautiful out this weekend. I decided to carry the black-and-tan forward with a black tank and an oversize taupe sweater for a walk in the neighborhood. And some classic skinny jeans to pull the look together.

Call it a bit of inspiration from the Gowanus. Aromatic banks and miry currents nestled between cute-cafe-artsy-shoppe-stroller-laden Park Slope and, well, cute-cafe-artsy-shoppe-stroller-laden Carroll Gardens. It may be a bit discordant, but, like a black and tan, it works. A little grub with the glitz, the old with the new, the worn-down with the up-and-up. I indulged in some wallet-friendly glitz, then pulled on my signature vintage army jacket, and '70s-inspired hat from Urban Outfitters.

I picked this necklace up for a couple bucks at forever 21 last year.  Adds a bit of glitz to an otherwise neutral palette.

I've had this hat for a while now, but didn't wear it much as the brim was about 2.5 inches wider...I trimmed it down, and now it feels much more wearable, less like a costume piece.

My dad passed this jacket on to me a couple years ago, it is well worn and authentic - from his brief stint in the army in the '70s.  You can find vintage army jackets in vintage and thrift stores.  Or if you're not into second hand, army inspired field jackets are available all over the place.

A perfect pairing for a perfect fall day!
